Giving back at Watkinscole

From the very beginning of WatkinsCole Electrical Contractors, Paul and I agreed that running a business should mean more than delivering great electrical work. We wanted our company to play a positive role in the community that helped shape us. That belief became part of our first vision statement over six years ago, and it remains central to how we operate today.

Giving back takes time, resources and commitment, but the truth is that we’ve gained far more than we’ve given. Being involved in our community has shaped us professionally and personally, and it continues to influence the kind of company we want WatkinsCole to be.

What giving back means to us

CSR can take many forms, but for us it’s about focusing on the areas where we can make a genuine difference. Over the years, we’ve learned that meaningful community support doesn’t always require grand gestures — it requires consistency, listening and showing up when people need it.

Here’s what that looks like at WatkinsCole:

  • Supporting our local community in practical ways
We stay connected to local residents, groups and organisations, listening to what matters most to them. When we can help, we do,  whether that’s offering time, skills or resources.
  • Encouraging our team to get involved
Every member of our team has dedicated “community support time” built into their annual schedule. Giving back is part of our culture, not an occasional activity.
  • Promoting local initiatives
Through our business networks, including BNI Sutton, we help raise awareness of local causes and encourage others to support them too.
  • Running our business responsibly
From recycling and waste reduction to safe working practices and ethical procurement, we aim to operate in a way that reflects our values.

Why it matters

Being active in our community has strengthened our business in ways we didn’t expect when we first started out:

At Watkinscole, our community is much too important for us to pay lip service to. To us CSR means doing things that have a positive impact on our neighbours through three main ways:

  • Stronger relationships with customers
People want to work with companies that care about more than profit. Giving back builds trust and shows our values in action.
  • Attracting and keeping great people
Many employees, especially younger generations, want to work for companies that contribute positively to society. CSR helps us attract people who share our values.
  • A more motivated and connected team
When our staff work together to support others, it builds pride, unity and a sense of purpose that carries into everyday work.
  • A deeper understanding of our community
By engaging with residents and local groups, we gain insight into the challenges people face and how our services can genuinely help.
  • Greater visibility and trust
When people meet us outside of work settings, they get to know who we are and what matters to us and that builds long‑term trust.

Our commitment going forward

Being part of the Belmont community has shaped our business and our values. Giving back is now embedded in our policies, our culture and our everyday decisions. We don’t do it for recognition — we do it because it’s the right thing to do, and because we believe good business and doing good should go hand in hand.

As directors, we remain committed to ensuring that WatkinsCole continues to support our community in meaningful, practical and authentic ways. Let’s do good in our lives, and let’s do good in business not because we expect a reward, but because it’s the right thing to do.
