Making Electrical Apprentices Count

Apprenticeships have been part of skilled trades for centuries, and we’ve certainly seen the benefits here at Watkinscole Electrical Contractors. We believe in giving people a strong start in the electrical engineering sector, just as both of our directors received when they completed their own five year apprenticeships through local colleges. They know first-hand the value an apprenticeship brings to the learner, the company and the wider industry. Here, we shine a spotlight on the apprenticeship programme we proudly provide.

A Background to Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships have existed for centuries, built on the simple idea that people learn best by working alongside experienced professionals. Traditionally, apprentices spent several years developing their skills under the guidance of a master craftsman, progressing from beginner to competent “journeyman” and eventually to expert level through practice and mentoring.

Modern apprenticeships follow the same principle but in a more structured way. Today’s programmes combine on the job learning with formal study, giving trainees both practical experience and the technical knowledge needed to become confident, capable professionals. There is no age limit, and people at any stage of life can choose to retrain or develop new skills through an apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships benefit learners, businesses and the wider community. Students gain real world experience while earning, and employers gain motivated team members who grow into skilled professionals. For companies like Watkins Cole, apprenticeships also allow us to train people in our values and working standards — shaping the next generation of engineers in the way we believe produces the best results.

Apprenticeships at Watkinscole

We have developed clear policies and processes to ensure our apprentices gain the solid foundation needed to become competent electrical engineers over a five year period. We currently support three apprentices, two improvers in partnership with Nescot College, and one junior project manager training with QA Limited.

Our programme blends one day per week of college learning with four days on site. This balance gives each apprentice valuable hands on experience while also building their technical knowledge and health and safety understanding through structured study.

During the first three years, apprentices complete their college modules and core training. Once these are successfully achieved, they progress to ‘Improver’ status and move into the final two years of full time on site development. This stage is essential, as it allows individuals—under close supervision—to begin working more independently. It is often during this period that confidence, capability and professional judgement grow rapidly.

We see many benefits from investing in apprenticeships at Watkins Cole. Apprentices bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and a strong sense of commitment. In return, we provide high quality training, real world experience and a clear pathway into a skilled career. Supporting apprentices also allows us to give back to the industry and community that helped us build the business we are today.
